THREAD COUNT
She wakes up too early,
From things that were said,
Or things never spoken,
And makes her bed.
There, the lines,
They are straighter now.
“I have done something today.
“I may be needed somehow.”
She caresses the sheets
What’s the thread count again?
She compresses the pillows
And rubs at a stain…
“What are you doing”?!!!
Shrieks the one who looks
Just like Mother,
But calls herself Daughter…
“Get back into bed!
“What have I said?
“It sounds like elephants
“Stomping over my head!
“Its too early to wake!
“What were you thinking?!!!”
Then pulls the sheets down
And slaps on the bed.
“Go back to sleep!
“Its four in the morning,
“And don’t make your bed,
“The housekeeper’s coming!”
She lays in her bed.
The lines are not straight.
The threads holding her
…Dissolving…
…Forgotten…
…Dismissed…
…Unneeded…
She creeps to the kitchen.
Dirty dishes are there.
Crumbs on the counters,
The floors are not bare.
She suds up the sink,
Carefully washing a bowl.
Her fingers trace patterns.
She starts to feel whole.
Blue and white patterns,
Lined up on the shelves.
Each one is unique,
Like individual selves…
“What are you doing?!!!”
Shouts the one who looks
Just like Brother,
But calls himself Son…
“Get back into bed!
“What have I said?
“You will fall again!
“What were you thinking?!!!”
He pulls the sheets down
And slaps on the bed.
“Go back to sleep
“I don’t have time to watch you.
“And don’t do the dishes.
“The housekeeper’s coming!”
She lays in her bed.
The lines are not straight.
The patterns holding her
…Dissolving…
…Forgotten…
…Dismissed…
…Unneeded…
They come for a visit,
With their dogs and kids,
All holding phones,
Secretly watching vids.
They plaster on smiles,
As they come near to her.
Who’s this or that?
It all starts to blur…
“I have a story.”
She whispers to the room.
“I have something to say.”
Then coughs up some spume.
No one seems to hear her,
Or to even care.
She’s all alone in a crowd,
With so much inside to share.
She makes her way to her room,
Then pulls the sheets down,
And slaps on the bed.
“Go back to sleep!
“They don’t have time for stories.
“And they better clean the mess.
“THIS housekeeper’s not coming!”
She lays in her bed

The stories that once held her
