SKEETER THE CAPRICIOUS MOSQUITO

SKEETER THE CAPRICIOUS MOSQUITO

One day Skeeter got  bored.
He sat watching cars on a road.
“I will be faster. I will go farther.
I will be better,” Skeeter started to goad.

“Skeeter runs fast!
Skeeter runs far!
Skeeter hops on
To a speeding car!”

He hopped from car to car,
To reach the front of the line
“I will be faster than fast
Only then will I really shine”

But there was no front of the line.
Cars wound on and on forever.
Just one car after the next,
All bunched up tight together.

Skeeter jumped down off a car
Feeling all sore and dejected
“If I can’t be the best,
That goal will just be rejected!”

Skeeter, again, got bored,
And sat watching clouds in the sky.
“I will be higher. I will go farther.
I will be better,” Skeeter set forth to try.

“Skeeter can climb
Skeeter can fly
Skeeter hops up
So very high”

Skeeter hopped, stalk to stalk,
Reaching the top of a hill
“I’ll be the highest of high
For me there is no sitting still!”

When he looked around at the top,
Behind it, more hills arose
And behind them was a mountain
The entire skyline imposed.

Skeeter jumped down off the hill
Feeling all sore and dejected
“If I can’t be the best
That goal, too, is rejected!”

Skeeter came to a pond
Surrounded by an inner net.
He skated upon the water,
Without even getting wet.

He looked down and saw
A big giant whiskery fish.
“That is where I will go,
To get to the bottom of this!”

“Skeeter swims down!
Skeeter sinks low!
Skeeter starts drinking
The pond water below!”

Skeeter tried to dive.
Skeeter tried to drink.
Skeeter kept gulping up
The pond water so to sink.

Skeeter drank and drank.
Skeeter drank more and more.
The fish looked up and winked
From down on the pond’s floor

Finally Skeeter, exhausted,
And tired down to his core,
Decided that trying to be best
Was not for him any more!

He didn’t need to be fastest,
Or highest, or deepest, or first,
To justify his existence.
He was enough, for best or for worst!

Skeeter the mosquito
Now figure skates on the pond.
It is enough for him to do
That of which he is fond.
