When dreams of a greater purpose
Have all been crushed
By well-meaning know-it-alls 
Who always know best
Where my path must lie

It’s hard to want to be here 
Anymore
Where those who profess to love me most
Micromanage all of my devotions
No, I mustn’t or I must
Express my innermost faith thus
Meditate, don’t pray
Or prayer is the only way
Or it has to be 30 minutes
Or has to be said just thustly
Or isn’t good enough for He

It’s hard to want to be here

Where good work is not enough
Where you gotta be a man
Or get paid much less than the rest
Where it is irrelavant
To show your innermost worth
Because no matter how hard you try
Looking the look
And walking the walk
Cannot be done in a dress
No matter how what the talk

Where honesty offends
When I am just real
And insist I am not the teacher
But merely a fellow traveler
That we can share together
What we find along the way

Where pretense is the only way
