RESOURCES

What would you say our number one most important resource is?

Some say cash, some would say oil, others would say land, water, or air. How about time? I would contend, however, that the most important resource, for any species, is its next generation.

Theodore Levitt, the marketing genius, once said “People don’t want to buy a quarter-inch drill. They want a quarter-inch hole.” Just so, people don’t actually want to buy a nail. They just want a picture on the wall. Yet go to any hardware store and you will find black nails, white nails, beige, gold, copper, and bronze nails. Why? The nail will just end up behind the picture anyway. Who cares what color it is? Yet how easy is it to get distracted and lose oneself in so many choices, only to inevitably run out of time and energy, and in the end, not even hang the picture! But you bought the perfect nail…

What is wrong with this picture?

We, as parents, teachers, social workers, clinicians, aunt’s, uncles, grandparents, or just neighbors, are entrusted with the most vital of all tasks; to preserve and guide our most important resource, the next generation.

We all have very important ‘adult’ things we need to manage in order to care for our next generation…such as a career, a house, cars, bills, and so on…
But are we at risk of becoming distracted and lost in all the important minutiae, while forgetting the whole picture?

Are we letting the future of our species grow up immersed in ‘public programming’, being babysat by canned commercials, while we struggle to make and preserve our dwindling resources for a bigger house, a better car, or for the next vacation, just so we can add another picture to our “say cheese” collection between the bickering and jostling to get to the next “picture-perfect” moment to capture?

When choosing the activities with which to fill the moments of our lives, alway remember that the nails we use to pin it all into place, while structurally imperative, are, in the end, forgotten.

Pick our nails briefly, apply our cumulative moments wisely, and enjoy the picture, together, right alongside our most important resource.
